This article covers the steps required to install tvOS support.

Introducing tvOS

Apple has released the 4th generation of the Apple TV hardware featuring a redesigned, touch-enable remote, running the new tvOS operating system (based on iOS9).

For the first time, tvOS opens the Apple TV platform to developers, allowing you to create rich, immersive apps and release them through the Apple TV's built-in App Store in a process similar to the experience of writing and releasing apps for iOS using the iTunes App Store.

For more information on tvOS, please see our Introduction to tvOS 9 documentation.

Xamarin.tvOS - Cycle 7

If you would like to get started developing apps for the new tvOS platform using Xamarin, you can install Xamarin.iOS (with support for tvOS 9.0 and watchOS 2.0) from the stable update channel.

Xamarin.iOS 9.8 (and greater) supports the latest stable tvOS 9.1 SDK that ships with Apple's Xcode 7.2. Along with the required API changes for tvOS several Obsolete API were removed from the new assembly.

Please see the API differences between iOS and tvOS and the Xamarin.iOS 9.8 Release Notes for a for a complete list of changes.

Installing tvOS Support

Support for Xamarin.tvOS is available from the Stable Update Channel. Please do the following to install:

  1. Install the latest Xcode – You'll need to Download the latest version of Xcode and install it to work with tvOS and watchOS support in Xamarin.
  2. Run Xcode First – You'll need to run a fresh install Xcode once, before updating and running Xamarin Studio, as it installs some tools that Xamarin requires the first time it is run.
  3. Install Stable Updates - Download and install the latest Xamarin updates from the Stable Update Channel.

You are now ready to create Xamarin.tvOS apps.

Xamarin Workbook

If it's not already installed, install the Xamarin Workbooks app first. The workbook file should download automatically, but if it doesn't, just click to start the workbook download manually.
