Installing the Xcode Command Line Tools

The Xcode Command Line Tools contain many tools and libraries from Apple for developing software on OS X. There are three situations that may require the installation of the Xcode Command Line Tools:
- Installing the gems for Calabash.
- Upgrading Ruby when using rbenv.
- You installed the Xcode Command Line Tools while use an older version of OS X, and have just upgraded to OS X Yosemite.
It is possible that the Xcode Command Line Tools have already been installed as a part of your Xcode installation. You may check this by typing the following in Terminal:
$ xcode-select -p
If you see:
then you already have the Xcode Command Line Tools installed.
To install the Xcode command line tools, start up Terminal and enter the following command:
$ xcode-select --install
xcode-select: error: command line tools are already installed, use "Software Update" to install update
This will start a series of dialogs:
Accept the Command Line Tools License Agreement:
The Xcode Command Line Tools will then be installed on your system:
Once the dialogs are finished, the Xcode Command Line Tools are installed. You can verify the tools are installed by typing:
$ xcode-select –p
