Install more frequent updates of Xamarin for Visual Studio 2017 by using the Xamarin Updater extension.
Installing the Visual Studio 2017 Preview provides access to preview new Xamarin features whenever new Visual Studio releases occur.
However, the Xamarin for Visual Studio extension is updated more frequently than Visual Studio.
These instructions explain how add an extension to Visual Studio 2017 that can download and install Xamarin updates:
Go to Tools > Extensions and Updates...
Open the Online > Visual Studio Marketplace tab.
Search for Xamarin Updater and press Download
- Created by: Xamarin
Restart Visual Studio (as instructed).
Re-open the Extensions and Updates window, got to the Updates tab, and press Update for each item to download all the available updates (if any are available):
Once the downloads are complete, you will see a message to restart Visual Studio:
Once Visual Studio is closed, the update/s will install:
Start Visual Studio again, and the latest updates will be available.
You can also download the Xamarin Updater directly from Visual Studio Marketplace (replacing steps 1-3 above).
The Xamarin Updater detects whether your IDE is a stable or Preview version so that it will only offer the available Preview updates if you are using Visual Studio 2017 Preview.
NOTE: Preview builds have known issues and the possibility of new issues being found during testing.
Stop Using the Extension Manager
The recommended way to stop using the Extension Manager feed is to:
- Go to Tools > Extensions and Updates... and delete the Xamarin Updater extension
- Go to Tools > Options... then Environment > Extensions and Updates and delete the Xamarin additional extension gallery.
- Use the Visual Studio Installer to un-install, and then re-install, the Mobile development with .NET (Xamarin) workload.
